What is the Hackathon and how is it related with Animation / VFX industry?

Ever wondered how the battle scenes in The Lord of the Rings movies with thousands of computer animated soldiers were engineered? Or how the bull in Baahubali moved and many didn’t know it was CG? How does the computer opponent in Counter Strike find you? Here’s your chance to find out!

This hackathon is for anyone who loves to code, is a game-enthusiast or a hacker at heart.

Code your way through a 24-hour hackathon to solve a problem in the visual-graphic world that will be announced just before the start of the Hackathon and win the coveted – ‘SuperMojo-Coder’.

** No Prior knowledge/experience in the field of Animation/VFX/Gaming is required.

Is this Individual or Team-based Hackathon?

It can be both individual and team-based. The maximum number of coders per team is 4.

Why you should participate?

Not only will you be recognized for your skills, by some of the best in the Coding Industry, you will also be blissfully rewarded by the exciting prizes that await the Winners.

That aside, such events are great way to network and meet Industry Professionals and more importantly get noticed for your skill-sets at a platform where it matters the most “a meaningful step in the right direction for growth” as an industry expert put it.

How Does It Work, the duration and what is the SuperMojo-Coder Title?

Simple. All contestants will assemble under a common roof on the given day and compete to code the most compelling Visual Graphic to the theme given in a controlled setting. The theme will be revealed prior to the start of the Hackathon.

Contestant will have to bring their own laptops which can compile C++ code.

The Winners take home exciting prizes and will wear the SuperMojo-Coder Title till the next year’s competition.

The Hackathon starts at 10 a.m. April 16, 2016 and wraps by 10.00 a.m. on the next day of April 17, 2016. It is advised to arrive one and half hours prior to the start of the Hackathon.

What about hardware and software?

Contestants will have to bring their laptops with these minimum requirements.

  • Laptops(s) Wifi Enabled
  • Graphics Card
  • Linux- Preferably latest stable distros
  • Open VDB, Blender

Hackathon FAQ’S

1. What is the goal of hackathon?

We want to create an environment that embraces new ideas and technology solutions for the Animation/VFX /Gaming Industry. We know it takes longer than a day to build great solutions, but this is ample time to form teams of competent people, exchange new ideas and complete the problem statement

2. Hackathon ? Great! I am up for it. How do I participate?

You need to Register for the competition and follow all the relevant guidelines, and important dates mentioned on the site here.

3. Is this Hackathon open for Students / Professionals? What if I am part-time studying and part-time working?

The Hackathon has two separate categories – Students and Professionals. Be sure to select the appropriate category while filling the Registration Form. If you are a part-time student and part-time working professional, you will qualify under the Students category.

Contestants must share a link to their work in the Registration Form to be selected for the competition. Only the best of the best will be selected and pitted against each other for the Hackathon.

4. When will the theme of the competition be announced? Will I be intimated by email about the same?

Theme of the Hackathon and other specific details pertaining to this category will be revealed just before the start of the competition on April 16, 2016. It is advised to arrive one and half hours prior to the start of the competition.

5. How can I prepare for this hackathon — do you have any tutorials or areas I should focus on?

Brush up basics on topics like Algorithms, Simulations, and C++ etc on the internet and you should be good to go!

6. What are the timings of the Hackathon?

The Hackathon starts at 10 a.m. on April 16, 2016 and wraps by 10.00 a.m. on the next day of April 17, 2016. It is advised to arrive one and half hours prior to the start of the Hackathon.

7. I submitted my Registration before the deadline. Can I re-submit if I want to?

Yes, you can. Finalists will be shortlisted post the registration deadline on March 24, 2016.
